The Sweet Water Bulldogs scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter of their regional match-up with A. L. Johnson High School last Friday, Oct. 6, to secure a hard fought 27-12 win over the Eagles. With the win the Bulldogs improved to 5-1 on the season and 4 and 0 in the region.

The closeness of the game between the two in county rivals came as no surprise to Bulldog Head Coach Stacy Luker. "The game with A. L. Johnson was exactly what I thought it would be," the Bulldog headman said. "It was a very physical game between two good football teams."

In the game the Bulldogs took the early lead taking their first possession in for a score when Anthony Landrum rambled 65 yards for a Sweet Water touchdown with 11:07 remaining in the first quarter. Ty Glass added the extra-point and the Bulldogs led 7-0.

The Eagles of A. L. Johnson answered the Bulldog score at the 6:49 mark of the first quarter scoring on a 19-yard pass play. Their two-point conversion attempt failed but the Bulldog lead had been cut to 7-6.

Sweet Water added to the lead with 7:36 to play in the second quarter when quarterback Drew Luker called his own number daring in from 15 yards out. Glass was on the mark again and Sweet Water led 14-6.

That's the way the first half would end as neither team could sustain another drive before intermission.

The Eagles let the Bulldogs know they were in for a fight early in the third quarter when they found pay dirt on a 47-yard running play with 9:04 showing on the clock. Their two-point conversion attempt once again fell short but the Sweet Water lead had been cut to 14-12.

If that wasn't enough to get the Bulldog's attention, the Eagles' recovery of a Bulldog fumble on the ensuing kickoff certainly did. "When they recovered our fumble on the kickoff I suddenly had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach," Bulldog Skipper Stacy Luker said. "We had not been playing as well as we could have on defense early in the game and it had me worried. I must say however, from that point on our defense stepped it up. I like to think our shutting them down and keeping them out of the end zone on that possession had to be a character builder."

After the defensive stop by Sweet Water, the Eagles pinned their opponent down at the four-yard line on a punt. From there the Bulldog offense would not be deterred and launched a 16 play 96 yard drive that ate almost nine minutes off the clock and ended with a 3 yard Dominic Holt run for a touchdown. The extra-point try by Glass missed the mark this time but the Bulldog lead was 20-12 with 9:24 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs put the final touches on the win with 2:28 remaining in the game when Drew Luker scored his second touchdown of the night on an eight yard run. Glass booted the extra-point home giving the Bulldogs a 27-12 lead that would end up being the final for the game.

In the win, the Bulldog offense that accumulated 308 yards, was led on the ground by Anthony Landrum with 96 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries. Following him was; Drew Luker with 87 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries and Dominic Holt with 59 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries.

Over on defense Drew Luker led the charge with 12 tackles followed by Scottie Nelson with nine and Jacques Lockett with seven.

The Bulldogs have the week off before meeting South Lamar in two weeks.
