Letters Candidates urged to take anti-littering campaign pledge Dear Editor, Once again the political season is upon us, as anyone can tell by the masses of campaign signs that have sprung up along the roadsides. Some of these signs are legally placed, but most are not. Section 23-1-6, Code of Alabama 1975, prohibits the placing of signs on the rights-of-way and along the public roads of Alabama and is also a violation of state and federal highway beautification acts. Technically, these illegally placed signs constitute litter. As a representative of the Clarke County Citizens Against Littering, I have been designated to bring the above facts to the attention of all candidates running for public office. We would encourage all candidates, as law-abiding citizens to commit to, and abide by, the following pledge: "As a condition of my qualification to seek public office, I agree not to place or authorize the placement of any of my campaign materials illegally on public lands, including roadside rights-of-way, or on any private property without express permission from the property owner. I will instruct my campaign workers to abide by this pledge as well, and will further instruct my campaign that campaign materials so located, regardless of the source, must be removed by my campaign within 14 days after the election." We thank all candidates for their cooperation in this effort to keep our county litter-free.
Walter Davis, Representative Clarke County Citizens Against Littering
Does this mean it is open season on Democrat editor? Dear Editor, In your latest words of inspiration, a better title would be "I Love Bubba," [Jim Cox's Editor's Notes, Oct. 5], you state President Clinton would be justified in assaulting Chris Wallace for doing his job. The agreement going in was 50/50. Half the interview would be on Clinton's pet project (or his most recent since Monica) and half on anything else. Michael Scheuer ran the Bin Laden unit of the CIA until his retirement in 2004. He is no fan of President Bush or the war. After the Clinton tantrum, Scheuer declared that Clinton, Sandy Berger and Richard Clarke had 8-10 chances to kill Bin Laden and they refused. He went on to say that all three men are lying about the facts and defaming the CIA agents who risked their lives to gather intelligence. Dear Editor, surely you noticed Clinton's finger-waving when he lied to the country in 1998 and then again with Chris Wallace. How can you mention slanted news without mentioning CNN? I guess slanted news is in the eye of the slanter. My concern is that you just gave the OK for anybody who has been or will be interviewed to rearrange your smirk.
