Dr. Steve Furr named to USA Board of Trustees
Dr. Steven Paul Furr of Jackson succeeds state Sen. Pat Lindsey of Butler, who was appointed in 1993 and completed his 12-year term. Furr is a physician in Washington County. He earned two USA degrees: a bachelor's in biology in 1976 and a doctor of medicine in 1981. Andalusia attorney John M. Peek took the seat held by former state Sen. Crum Foshee, also of Andalusia, who was appointed in 1993 and completed his 12-year term. Peek graduated from USA in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in business and management studies before attending law school at the University of Alabama. Attorney James A. Yance of Malbis was appointed to complete the unexpired term of Jefferson County Commissioner Larry Langford, who resigned with three years remaining. Yance earned a bachelor's degree in political science at USA in 1970 and a law degree at the University of Alabama. He is voluntary chairman of USA's comprehensive fundraising campaign, "Campaign USA." USA's board has 17 members, including the governor and the state superintendent of education serving as ex-officio members. The appointments will now go before the state Senate for confirmation. A regular term on the USA board is 12 years. Located in Mobile with a branch campus in Baldwin County, the University of South Alabama is one of the state's fastest growing universities, with more than 13,300 students and academic programs in arts and sciences, Mitchell College of Business, computer and information sciences, engineering, education, medicine, allied health professions, nursing, and continuing education and special programs. The University owns and operates two major hospitals: USA Medical Center and USA Children's and Women's Hospital, as well as the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute, a regional cancer research and treatment center.
