Murders and manslaughter trials are set

Criminal jury trials will begin in Clarke County Circuit Court Monday.

Although typical criminal jury terms are for one week only, Judge Thomas Baxter will hold court for two weeks.

Five men are scheduled to be tried for the murder of Quinton Webb, during Baxter's second week of court. Sherwin Parker, Byron Worthy, Arthur Yelder, Jamie S. Yelder and Derrick Bracy have all been charged with the shooting death of Webb on Feb. 7, 2004. Webb and his cousin, Maurice Williams were standing outside the Star Track Lounge in Alma when an argument escalated and both men, who were bystanders, were shot. Webb died from his injuries.

Parker will also stand trial for two counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. Bracy will stand trial for unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, second degree and possession of cocaine.

Byron Lakeith Puller is scheduled to be tried on manslaughter charges for the shooting death of LaShavin Lavar Johnson on April 19. The two men were in a vehicle at the Exxon Station in Jackson when Johnson thumped Puller on the back of the head. Puller aimed a pistol at Johnson over his shoulder and when Johnson put his hands on the pistol it discharged. It was believed the shooting was accidental.

Marquez Rankin faces trial for reckless vehicle murder. It was believed Rankin had been drag racing on walker Springs Road when he hit another vehicle head-on, killing the driver, Helida Robinson Reid and her son Derrick Lashaun Robinson, Feb. 12, 2004.

Lajoyce Harmon, a former Clarke County Jail employee is scheduled to stand trial for promoting prison contraband for custodial sex. She was indicted for alleged sexual contact with a prisoner and giving money to the same prisoner.

Judge Baxter will hear those cases.

Nathan Lee Chapman faces trial for the murder of Kelvin Foster. Foster's body was found at the corner of East Main Street and Highway 5 in Fulton after someone reported hearing gunshots in the area. It was apparent Foster had been shot and while officers were at the scene Chapman turned himself in at the Clarke County Sheriff's Department. The incident occurred Dec. 1, 2005. Judge Harold Crow will hear the case.
