C-M Gas anticipating less expensive gas this winter Al Bean of the management team now running Clarke-Mobile Counties Gas District told the board Monday that the district was 75 percent "hedged" on natural gas for the coming winter season. "I believe customers will pay less than last year," he said. Bean and an accountant told the board that all bookkeeping operations are being returned in-house with an outside firm offering reviews quarterly or on some regular basis. The district is changing its financial reporting period from a calendar year to a fiscal year because it will give a better picture of winter gas usage. Bean said that the operation is doing well. A compensation plan is being studied and will be presented to the directors soon. New line relocation in the Stave Creek area has been completed, work continues on the Wilcox system interconnect and the extension to the new Louisiana Pacific OSB plan continues. "That plant is amazing," Bean added. Clarke-Mobile is negotiating for a tap into the Transco gas line but the asking price is $1.1 million. An attempt is being made to reduce the price. The system is also looking at buying storage capacity along the coast. The extra capacity would allow the system to hedge more gas in the event of a hurricane or when prices drop. Plans are being made for open houses at each of the Clarke County offices-Grove Hill, Jackson and Thomasville-on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Several door prizes will be given away to customers, including a gas grill, turkey cooker and infrared heater. Jackson Mayor Richard Long was reappointed as a director to the LA Gas District.
The system is anticipating several capital projects, including line extensions and new offices. The directors approved a resolution that will allow the consolidation of financing into one bond issue and the repayment of any expended funds to the system, should they decide to do that.
