The three rules of winning football games are controlling the line of scrimmage, winning the turnover game and being sound in the special teams department.

The Clarke County High School Bulldogs did just that in beating the Bulldogs of Washington County 14-7 to claim the Class 3A Region 1 title last Friday at Jordan-Wilcox Stadium in Chatom.

Of course CCHS will have to beat Francis Marion this week to assure them region title, but the Rams are 0-7 after falling 39-18 to Central-Hayneville.

The two teams traded possessions throughout the first quarter before a 7-yard punt gave CCHS possession at their own 41-yard line.

From there Clarke County moved downfield. In the drive they converted two big fourth down plays.

Junior fullback Kenneth Kimbrough capped the drive with a 12-yard sprint. The try for two pass fell incomplete but with 6:52 left in the half, Clarke County led 6-0.

On the ensuing kick-off the WCHS return man muffed the kick and Tim Barnett recovered the ball for CCHS at the Chatom 22-yard line.

Jamarcus Robinson capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge.

Tyler Walker tossed a jump ball that Duane Owens came down with for the 2-point conversion as Clarke County doubled the lead to 14-0 with 4:01 left in the second frame.

CCHS was able to get the ball down as close as the WCHS 5-yard line in the closing seconds but a penalty backed them up and the half ended with Clarke County still on top 14-0.

Washington County, after forcing CCHS to turn the ball over on downs at the Chatom 21-yard line, took the ball and moved in the opposite direction.

WCHS capped the drive with a 13-yard scoring pass from QB Kyle Pennington to Justin Byrd. Maurice Leverett kicked the PAT to cut the Clarke County lead to 14-7 with 1:39 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Clarke County defense bent but didn't break as they forced Washington County to turned the ball over on downs when they had driven as deep as the CCHS 29-yard line.

Marquentrell Lambert sacked Pennington for a 15-yard loss to give Clarke County the ball near midfield.

On the next Washington County possession Duane Owens picked off Pennington's pass at the CCHS 26-yard line to halt that potential scoring drive.

From there CCHS was able to run out the clock, preserving a 14-7 region win.

Kimbrough led all rushers with 185 yards on 33 carries and a TD.

The CCHS defense held WCHS to 110 yards on the ground and 106 yards in the air.

This Friday the Bulldogs (5-2, 5-0) hosts Francis Marion for homecoming. Game time is 7 p.m. at H.G. Prim Stadium.
