Bears fall to Silas in key region game
The Leroy Bears took a tough 25-19 loss to Southern Choctaw on Friday night at Palmer Stadium. The Bears appeared to score the winning touchdown with four seconds left, only to have it called back after it was declared a touchdown by an official. The Leroy team came out smoking, stopping Southern Choctaw on their opening drive. The Bear offense came out and drove down the field, only to be stopped shy of the goal line. Paul Gartman would come in and knock down a 22-yard field goal to give the Bears a 3-0 lead early on. The Indians would get on the board after the next drive on a goal line pass to Terrell Johnson. PAT was good and Southern Choctaw led 7-3. After stopping Leroy for a three and out, Southern Choctaw would score on a 25-yard pass completion from Skylar Gibson to Marty Frost. The two-point conversion was no good and Southern Choctaw had Leroy 13-3 with 7:18 left until halftime. Southern Choctaw would add one more on a QB sneak by Gibson to give the Indians a 19-3 lead with 2:33 before the half. Leroy would get the ball back, knowing if they could score before half, they would be ok. The Bears drove down field and with 11 seconds before going to the locker rooms, Clint Moseley hooked up with Aerik Davis for a 21-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was good and the score at the break was 19-11 still in favor of the team from Gilbertown. On Leroy's opening possession after the half, the Bears drove towards the end zone and was able to punch it in on a 27-yard touchdown run by Moseley. Leroy added yet another two-point conversion to make it 19-19 with 9:49 remaining in the third quarter. The score would remain tied until 2:13 left in the game when Southern Choctaw drove down the field, converting on several plays that turned into what many considered questionable calls, one controversy centered around a ball that appeared to hit the ground before being caught and taken for a 20-yard pickup. The Indians put two men in motion and Jay Johnson scored around left end. The flag was thrown but it was called offsides on Leroy. The two-point conversion was missed and the score was 25-19 with 2:13 left in the game. The Bears struggled to drive the field and were forced to convert on a 4th and 22. The Bears attempted a pass and it fell incomplete, but pass interference was called on the Indians. The Bears had a first down at the 27-yard line when the officials called a meeting with Coach Danny Powell from Leroy. It was determined that they already had taken three time-outs, According to later reports, the team had previously only taken two time-outs. With 10 seconds left in the game, Leroy was able to throw a touchdown pass to tie up the score, only to see a flag thrown after the play to reverse the call. Leroy had one more play, but failed to convert. "It was a good game from a spectator point, but was not as good from where I was standing," said Head Coach Powell. "We were unable to catch a break in that game, but now we must prepare for Bayside."
