Don't be willingly ignorant and eternally lost
By Billy Cardwell
Magnolia Assembly of God

Please read II Peter 3:1-7 and with careful note to v.5. Notice the phrase "willingly-ignorant." This phase simply means, to be of a particular mind or opinion, something escapes them of their own will, i.e., they are purposely, willfully ignorant. What an indictment on this generation!

Other translations say: (1) They deliberately forget. (2) They willfully ignore the fact. (3) For they willfully overlook and forget. Saint Peter reminds these "wise guys" of two facts that seem to escape them. You are saying, "Where is the promise of his coming and all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation." Let me remind you-all things have not always been as they are, there have been great changes, there was once a great catastrophe-a flood-but this they willfully forget. There has already been one great catastrophe-a flood-there will be another: "The heavens and the earth, which are now"-shall be destroyed by fire.

You "Willfully forget" the former-the flood-and the fact that the present world is to be destroyed by fire. Literally this escapes them of their own will. In Verse 5 "By the word of God," the first world was destroyed by a flood and in Verse 7, "By the same word," (of God) the present world will be destroyed by fire. You willingly, conveniently put this out of your minds and call yourselves "wise."

You are "Willingly-Ignorant:"

(1) of God's free salvation-free to all by faith in Jesus' name and His shed blood for the forgiveness of sin;

(2) of God's wrath-divine judgement to be inflicted upon the wicked. God does not hate people, He hates sin, and sin is "anything" not like God. Therefore in punishing sin-sinful people will be destroyed;

(3) of the coming destruction of the world-II Peter 3:10. This verse states, "That the heavens will pass away with a great noise, the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

Read Romans 1:28 and notice the phrase, "Did not like to retain God in their knowledge." This, simply put, means that they did not desire "to acknowledge God." Look at the phrase, "God gave them over to a reprobate mind." The center reference of the KJV states, "A mind void of judgement." Void in the dictionary says: "Vacant, containing nothing, empty." Therefore, they have no concept of judgement. This happens not because truth is not available, or they have not been exposed to truth, or that truth is hidden from them, but they are "Willingly-Ignorant." They have purposely, willfully, chosen the direction that they are going.

"Willingly-Ignorant"-eternally lost.
