Jackson city councilman called to active duty It was announced during Tuesday's council meeting that Jackson City Councilman Anthony Jackson has been called into active duty by the U.S. Army. Jackson is an active member of the Army Reserve and is required to report to Fort Seals, OK, on Oct. 29. Many of those in attendance at Tuesday's meeting wished him well. Following the meeting, Jackson said the first stint of his duty will be for at least six months, with more duty to possibly be added. From Fort Seals he will transfer to Fort Lee, Va., where he said he will probably receive further orders. Jackson currently holds the rank of second lieutenant, but is receiving a promotion to first lieutenant upon his activation. As an officer with the U.S. Army, he serves as a logistics quartermaster. Serving as one of two councilmen who represent District 1, Jackson and his wife, Tiffany have three children, Destiny, 11, Dekendren, 9 and Domanek, 4. He is currently employed by Wal-Mart as a manager and also owns and operates the Ace Learning Center, which specializes in preparing students for the GED (General Education Diploma) exam and offers tutoring services for school-age children. "As the representative for the district I live in, he [Jackson] has really been there for the citizens," said Jetti Johnson during the public comments portion of the meeting. "He will surely be missed and we hope he comes home safely."
In other business: +Councilman Paul South informed the council that the new generators for the water plant had been received and were being prepared to be installed. "They will be up and running by next year's hurricane season," he said. +During his report to the council, Police Chief Charles Burge said members of several departments in the region attended a class on the "A Child is Missing" program, at the Jackson campus of Alabama Southern Community College earlier in the day. He said the service, which helps locate missing children and alzheimer's patients who have wandered away, is offered free. He added that the department is currently in the process of signing up for the service. +Members of the Pine City Ambassadors and their sponsors, Steve James and Tina Pugh attended Tuesday's meeting. Each ambassador introduced themselves to the council. James thanked the council for its support of the group and explained that the program would better prepare them for future endeavors. Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce members Marty Parker and Beth Criswell, who work with the group, were also in attendance. +Chamber of Commerce Director LaShaunda Holly told the council that plans for the annual Fall Festival were in full swing and told some of the events that would be taking place that day. "We expect a good turnout for this year's event," she added. +Debra Grayson, director of White Smith Memorial Library, reported that approximately $16,000 was raised at this year's annual benefit auction. She said the money will be added to the library's building expansion fund.
