The School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA) announces Gerald Stephens, Superintendent of Clarke County Schools, as a finalist for the 2007 Alabama Superintendent of the Year. Statewide judging of Stephens' application and six other Alabama superintendents will occur next week and Alabama's Superintendent of the Year will be announced in November. Alabama's Superintendent of the Year will receive a bronze medallion with the Superintendent of the Year emblem and a plaque from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), SSA's national affiliate and sponsor of this program. Alabama's Superintendent of the Year will also be honored during the SSA Winter Conference in January and at the AASA Annual Conference during March in New Orleans, La.

He holds his AA Certification, his Masters and Bachelors degrees from the University of Alabama. He received his Associate degree from Southwest Mississippi Jr. College.

Nominations for the award were submitted from the regional districts of the School Superintendents of Alabama membership to a committee of educators and representatives of education. Other 2007 finalists include Dr. Barry Sadler, Eufaula City Schools; Dr. Jamie Blair, Vestavia Hills City Schools; Dr. Tommy Bice, Alexander City Schools; Dr. James Carter, Selma City Schools; Dr. Wayne Ray, Russellville City Schools; and Lee Messer, Talladega City Schools.
