Students attend AIDS prevention seminar
Student Government Association president, Shareka Dickinson, and vice president, Brittany Lowery, attended the 3rd Annual Alabama Youth Council for HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Conference, Oct. 17 at Lane Professional Development Center in Birmingham. The students had the opportunity to meet the main speaker Melinda Toole, Miss Alabama 2006. Other speakers included Pete Key, Cedric Wherry, Renee Vance and Tom Robertson, professionals who discussed the importance of making a difference within the community. The students were also educated on how to prevent HIV/AIDS and the causes of the infectious disease. The two officers also participated in the FOCUS program and hopes to start one at CCHS to keep their peers informed about the disease. Dickinson and Lowery, along with the other SGA members, intend on celebrating the progress made in the battle against the AIDS epidemic World AIDS Day, Dec. 1. HIV continues to be a major health issue for Alabama with over 14,000 cases a year. Both of the girls said that the conference was a great experience and something neither of them will forget. SGA advisor, Ms. Mary Sharp, accompanied the two. The school participated in the second annual conference last year with Justin Davis attending along with sponsor, Ms. Mary Roberts.
