Alma club murder trial underway

A complex murder trial got underway in Circuit Judge Thomas Baxter's court Wednesday morning.

Baxter told the various lawyers involved in the case Monday as they prepared to strike a jury that the trial could last the full week, or longer.

Only defendant Sherwin Parker is being tried but he was charged with murder along with Byron Worthy, Arthur Yelder, Jamie S. Yelder and Derrick Bracy in the shooting death of Qinton Webb at the Star Track Lounge in Alma on Feb. 7, 2004. An arguement outside of the club resulted in gunfire. Webb and his cousin, Maurice Williams, were bystanders and both were struck. Williams survived.

Two jury verdicts were rendered in criminal trials in Clarke County Circuit Court last week.

In Judge Thomas Baxter's court, Eric Wright was found guilty of the charge of receiving stolen property, first degree. He will be sentenced Dec. 11.

Lamont Foster was charged with robbery, third degree. A jury found him guilty of the lesser charge of theft of property, third degree. He received a sentence of 321 days, credited for the 321 days he has already served. Judge Harold Crow heard that case.

A mistrial was declared in the trial of Michale Holloway, charged with indecent exposure. It was decided that if a crime did indeed occur, it happened in Choctaw County and not in Clarke.
