Veterans Day Tribute
Memorial fountain honors fallen WWII serviceman
Mildred Huggins and son Alfred Clay Rivers pose in front of the memorial drinking fountain, a tribute to their late husband and father, Jewel Alfred Rivers, at the Grove Hill Public Library last week. They are shown in the old photo above when the memorial was erected in 1949 and likely dedicated around 1950. The senior Rivers was killed when his Army Air Corps plane was shot down in the Pacific in 1944. Mrs. Huggins was librarian at the Grove Hill facility for years. She resides in the Thomasville Nursing Home now. Alfred Rivers lives in California and retired as a pilot and colonel in the U.S. Air Force after a 25-year career that his father would undoubtedly be proud of.
