Complaint of speeding on Court St. in Grove Hill
Gina Overtsreet went before the Grove Hill Town Council Monday night to request traffic control devices and a slower speed limit be enforced on Court Street. "I bought three small houses on Court Street and while I have been working on the property I have watched the traffic. You can tell when court is going on because of all the traffic," she said. Overtsreet told council members there were two speed limit signs on the road, one stating the speed was 15 miles per hour and another stating it was 30 miles per hour, yet in her estimation, no one seemed to drive less than 60 miles per hour. She also noted that there were a good many small children who got off and on the school bus on the street and played at homes and the apartment complex along the street. "The police do a good job of patrolling, but patrolling isn't getting it. Something has got to be done. I would like to see one speed zone on the street and speed breakers. I don't see the harm in that," she added. Grove Hill Police Officer Daniel Gibson agreed that the traffic on the road was heavier when court was in session or an event was held in the downtown area because motorists used the street as a short cut to the bypass. He suggested the speed limit be zoned no more than 25 miles per hour on the road. Mayor Lamar Hudson said he felt the best thing would be to study the situation and see if it warrants a new speed zone and speed bumps be installed and council members agreed.
Nutrition Center Brandy Wilkerson of Alabama Tombigbee Regional Commission went before the council to remind them the ATRC would have to be approved by them to administer the $250,000 CDBG grant. The grant will help fund the new senior nutrition center, which will be built at the corner of Jackson and Clark Streets. Council members approved the contract with ATRC at a rate of $20,000, which is part of the $250,000. "The grant won't pay for the entire project, but it helps. I think it's going to be a nice facility," Mayor Hudson said.
Other business A building permit was approved for Ken Bush to make repairs to his home on Church Street. A building permit was approved for Linda Harrell to make outside repairs to a house on Cobb Street. A building permit was approved for Pruitt's Self Storage to build storage units on Church Street/Jackson Street. Council members approved a recommendation by the Zoning Board of Adjustment Committee to grant a zoning variance for the Grove Hill Public Library's expansion. The Town of Grove Hill will observe the Veterans Day holiday Friday, Nov. 10. Saturday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day and the Town Hall is closed on Saturdays.
