Veterans Day program Saturday to remember first casualty of WWI

Local Veterans of Foreign Wars veterans will hold a Veterans Day program at the Grove Hill Cemetery Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.

The program will be at the grave of John T. Lavender, the first soldier from Clarke County to die in World War I.

Lavender, 23, was killed in France in 1918 but it would be 1922 before his body was returned home for burial in the local cemetery.

Dr. Terry Rivers will be the guest speaker for the program. He has seen active duty in Iraq in recent years.

Veterans Day, originally Armistice Day, recognizes the day Germany surrendered, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

The public is invited to attend Saturday's program.
