Nation sends loud wakeup call Tuesday

Americans are not happy with the war in Iraq and other Republican-led policies. In an election that seemed similar to the Great Britain parliamentary style of government's vote of confidences, the electorate strongly showed their distaste for the war and for President Bush.

For the first time in over a decade, the Democrats will be the majority party in the House of Representatives. Big gains were made in the Senate too but it appears that the Republicans will maintain a razor-thin majority there.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., will become the first woman House speaker, replacing Republican Dennis Hastert who won reelection but lost the ruling spot because of the majority shift.

President Bush called Pelosi Tuesday night to congratulate her and Wednesday he was to have lunch with her and other Democratic leaders.

We don't understand why he didn't see the handwriting on the wall and reach out to the Democrats without the voters having to tell him so pointedly to do so.
