People are sick and tired of dirty races A lot of Alabamians would have voted for "none of the above" had that been a viable option Tuesday. In a state infamously known for dirty politicking, this year's takes the cake from the governor's race right on down to local levels. Few candidates wanted intelligent, rational discussions of the issues and the needs of the state, choosing instead to belittle their opponents. The Republicans cast themselves as "conservatives" and their Democratic opponents as "liberals." The local state House and Senate races were disgusting. Are we, the voters, partly responsible because we see the democratic process as a game and a popularity contest, similar to the idiotic competitions that dominate our TVs today? In the next election we should demand that candidates discuss issues and not personalities. That may be asking much but if the electorate demands that real issues be addressed, maybe the public dialog can be nudged that way.
