Averett wins commission seat; DuBose reelected
By Jim Cox

Only one of five Clarke County Republican candidates was successful in bids for local offices Tuesday.

Barry Chancey easily won the District 3 seat on the Clarke County school board, polling 61 percent of the vote.

The big race was for sheriff where veteran sheriff's department lieutenant and Democratic candidate Bobby Moore edged State Trooper Gene Wiggins to succeed the retiring Jack Day.

Moore garnered 52.5 percent of the vote, winning by 452 votes.

In the District 1 County Commission race, Elma Averett, the Democrat, won with nearly 60 percent of the vote over Republican Henry Burge. He will succeed the retiring Rubye Andrews.

In Commission District 3 the race was a bit tighter with incumbent Democrat Patricia DuBose winning nearly 54 percent of the vote to defeat GOP challenger Clint Odom. Odom gave up a seat on the school board to run for the office.

In the District 3 school board race, Barry Chancey kept Odom's old seat in the Republican column with a 1,224 to 772 win over Democrat Karen Donald.

The biggest local win was for coroner where the Democratic candidate, Kevin Brunson, polled over 72 percent of the vote to beat Republican appointee Jonah Thomas.

Other races

Gov. Bob Riley, the Republican, carried Clarke County in his ride to statewide victory, polling 4,901 votes to Democratic Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley's 4,130.

The Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, Jim Folsom Jr., polled 5,229 votes to Republican Luther Strange's 3,706.

Mobile District Attorney John Tyson, the Democrat, polled 5,350 votes in the county to Republican incumbent Troy King's 3,471.

Sue Bell Cobb, the Democratic nominee for Chief Justice, received 5,044 votes in the county to Republican incumbent Drayton Nabers' 3,683.

Well over 50 percent of Clarke County's approximately 17,000 registered voters cast ballots Tuesday, an amazing turnout.
