CCHS fails to convert turnovers in loss to Tigers

The Clarke County High School Bulldogs let some opportunities slip through their fingers as they lost 26-6 to the Tigers of Thomasville High School in the 91 st meeting in the Backyard Brawl at H.G. Prim Stadium in Grove Hill.

The two squads traded possessions and turnovers in the first quarter as the Bulldogs gave up the ball once on a fumble and then took one back when Wil Dannelly intercepted a Jake Overstreet pass.

In the second quarter, after a Danny Norris punt pinned THS at their own 20-yard line, the Tigers started marching.

Overstreet had big completions to Tysean Thompson and Daril Jackson as the Tigers found themselves on the CCHS side of midfield.

Then Delvonte Harris went to work and capped the drive with a 29-yard scamper. Aguilar kicked the PAT and with 9:08 left in the first half Thomasville had a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs couldn't get untracked in the ensuing possession and Norris' punt attempt was blocked and recovered by Alex Bufford at the Bulldog 20-yard line.

Three plays later Overstreet hit Thompson with a 10-yard touchdown pass and Aguilar kicked the point-after touchdown to double the lead to 14-0 with 5:47 to go before the break.

In the closing minutes of the half Overstreet picked off Tyler Walker's pass at the Tiger 18-yard line to snuff out a potential scoring drive.

Staying in the air the Tigers started moving towards paydirt. Facing fourth and goal from the 2-yard line and with :02 left before halftime, Overstreet plowed in on the keeper.

The kick failed but the Tigers had a 20-0 lead at the break.

In the third quarter the Bulldog defense turned the Tigers away after they had driven in as close as the CCHS 14-yard line.

After taking over at their own 38-yard line it took just three plays for the Bulldogs to hit paydirt.

On the second play Kenneth Kimbrough broke free for a 60-yard run down to the Tiger 1-yard line. On the next play he powered in for the score.

The kick failed and with 7:33 left in the third CCHS cut into the Thomasville lead 20-6.

On the ensuing Tiger possession Chris Anderson recovered a fumble, giving CCHS the ball near midfield.

Three plays later the Bulldogs were forced to punt.

Keyed by 9-, 10- and 31-yard completions from Overstreet to Thompson, Thomasville moved the ball down the field.

Mitchell Cowan capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge.

The kick was blocked, but the Tigers added to their lead 26-6 with 9:36 left in the game.

One last CCHS threat was snuffed out as Buford intercepted Walker's pass at the THS 10-yard line.

From there Thomasville ran out the clock, preserving the 26-6 win over their county rivals.

Kimbrough paced the CCHS offense with 161 yards on 16 carries.

For Thomasville Overstreet was 13-of-22 passing for 191 yards, a score and three interceptions. Thompson hauled in eight passes for 135 yards and a score. Harris had 17 carries for 134 yards and a score.

This Friday the two schools begin the quest for state crowns as CCHS (7-3, 7-0) hosts Gordo's Green Wave while Thomasville (9-1, 6-1) hosts the Falcons of Central-Tuscaloosa.

Both games kick off at 7 p.m.
