The second trip for the Clarke Prep School Gators to Bessemer had similar results as the first as they lost 37-8 to the top ranked Rebels in the first round of the AISA Class AAA playoffs last Friday night.

The loss prevented the Gators from getting a third straight state title and fifth in the last seven years.

Walter Arrington put the Rebels on the board first when he scored on a 30-yard run. The added 2-point conversion gave Bessemer an 8-0 lead with 1:40 left in the first quarter.

Clarke Prep responded with a classic Wing-T drive with a 14-play, 74-yard drive to paydirt. In the drive they converted a fourth and one inside their own territory.

Wesley Morgan capped the drive with a 3-yard plunge. Brett Bradford ran in the 2-point conversion and with 6:26 remaining before halftime the game was knotted at 8-8.

Bessemer took the ensuing possession and retook the lead when Ogilvie scored on a 1-yard sneak. The added 2-point conversion doubled the Rebel lead to 16-8.

In the second half Bessemer added 21 points to win the game 37-8, eliminating the Gators from the playoffs.

Bradford led CPS with 80 yards on 16 carries. Morgan had 77 yards on 20 carries and a score.

The Gators end the season with a 6-5 record.
