WWI casualties, others remembered at program

Lt. Col. Terry Rivers was the guest speaker.
Temperatures dropped dramatically just as a Veterans Day program was starting in Grove Hill Saturday and a light mist of rain was falling, but the program to remember those who have fought and died for their country continued.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 5106 of Thomasville, sponsored the program at the grave of John R. Lavender in the Grove Hill Cemetery. Lavender was the first Clarke Countian to die in battle in World War I.

The names of all of the servicemen and women who died in World War I were read aloud.

The service was held at 11 a.m. The armistice ending World War I was signed at that hour on the 11th day of the 11th month and for years the day was commemorated as Armistice Day. Today, it is Veterans Day.

Lt. Col. Terry Rivers, a medical doctor who grew up in Grove Hill and a veteran of the Iraqi war, was the guest speaker. He recalled the many service men and women who have given their time and lives to defend the United States.

Girl Scouts were bundled against the sudden cold but sang beautifully when called upon.
A Boy Scout troop posted the colors to open the program and Girl Scouts sang songs to close it.

VFW Post 5106 Commander Cliff Scarbrough read a resolution commemorating the service of World War I soldier John Lavender and presented it to Lavender's descendants Saturday. Lavender was the first Clarke Countian to die in World War I.
