WWI casualties, others remembered at program
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 5106 of Thomasville, sponsored the program at the grave of John R. Lavender in the Grove Hill Cemetery. Lavender was the first Clarke Countian to die in battle in World War I. The names of all of the servicemen and women who died in World War I were read aloud. The service was held at 11 a.m. The armistice ending World War I was signed at that hour on the 11th day of the 11th month and for years the day was commemorated as Armistice Day. Today, it is Veterans Day. Lt. Col. Terry Rivers, a medical doctor who grew up in Grove Hill and a veteran of the Iraqi war, was the guest speaker. He recalled the many service men and women who have given their time and lives to defend the United States.
