County lawmen are looking for two men who robbed Garrick Corner Grocery in Scyrene Thursday night and the driver of the get-away car.

According to owner Cindy Garrick, the cashier, Laura Newton had gone to the kitchen area to make a pizza for customer Michael Turner. Turner was sitting on a stool at the register and listening for the telephone.

Two men entered the store, but Turner's back was to them and he didn't notice the shotgun in one man's hands until the subject used the gun to nudge Turner and asked him if he could open the cash register.

"The cameras caught them. They had T-shirts, with eyes cut out, pulled over their faces and they wore socks on their hands," Garrick said.

Turner told the men he didn't work there and was waiting on a pizza. They went to the kitchen and got Newton. They held the gun in her back and led her to the cash register and demanded money.

It is believed the robbers were familiar with the business because they knew extra cash was kept on hand to cash payroll checks on Thursdays and they also knew where the kitchen was. When Newton attempted to press the alarm button, one of the men told her not to.

"Laura tried to tell them there wasn't any money, but she finally opened the register. About that time a car drove up in the parking lot. They told Laura to give them the drawer and she told them they would never get away, that there was a car right outside and the change would weighed too much. They took what cash she had in her hand and the one with the gun fired a shot just above the door," Garrick said.

The gunman aimed the gun at the vehicle and acted as if he were firing at it.

Officers believe a vehicle was waiting for the two men just around the corner from the store on a dirt road off County Road 35.

"We're exhausted and we're scared, but everything worked out perfectly. No one was hurt and everyone's okay, so we're thankful for that. I told Laura next time don't argue, just give them the money and the gas to go if they want it," Garrick laughed.

Investigator Vergil Chapman with the Clarke County Sheriff's Department said they know the men had a long barrel shotgun and they believe they fled down County Road 35 in a white Grand Prix or Crown Victoria.

Anyone with any information about the robbery is asked to call Chapman at the Clarke County Sheriff's Department, 251-275-8132.
