Thanksgiving, 1932

We need to be thankful for a lot of things. Most of us have a pretty good life these days, although we will readily admit there are pockets of severe need in our county.

Still, consider these excerpts from a 1932 Thanksgiving editorial in The Democrat and be thankful that year has been assigned to history:

"As we come to another Thanksgiving day there are doubtless many in Clarke county who feel that they have little for which to be thankful. Compared with years immediately preceding the period of depression, this may seem to be true, but when we of Clarke county consider our blessings in a comparative sense, there is much for which to be thankful.

"Consider the plight of thousands in the cities...Large numbers of proud spirits have been forced to take their places in the bread lines and their condition is indeed pitiable.

"The average Clarke county family which has made an honest effort approaches the winter with cribs filled with corn, beans, peas, peanuts, and potatoes, and this is supplemented by eggs and milk, pork chops and country sausage. Money is scarce but produce can be exchanged for the everyday necessities which cannot be produced on the farm.

"Those who have a surplus should be thankful that they can divide with less fortunate neighbors.

"And all of us should be thankful that we seemingly have weathered the worst of the depression and that we will soon be on the upgrade toward brighter and better times."
