WHMS 'Rocket' kids

Mr. Wilhelm helps Kelvin Burden prepare his rockets for lift off as Britton Barnes watches.
On Friday, Oct. 20, the PAWS students and students in Mrs. Gordon's Reading Class went to the park for an after-school rocket launch. David Wilhelm, the eighth grade science teacher, explained the principles of physics that cause a rocket to fly. The students launched their individual Alka-Seltzer rockets one after another.

Wilhelm then allowed students to take turns flipping the switch to shoot off the larger

rockets. Everybody had fun counting down to zero to launch the rockets and running after the rockets as they fell back to earth. These activities were part of the community book read sponsored by the Grove Hill and Thomasville Arts Councils. All involved agreed that Homer Hickam, author of The Rocket Boys, and his friends must have had lots of fun and excitement at Cape Coalwood in West Virginia.
