Lady Bulldogs, Bulldogs open with wins

The Clarke County High School Bulldogs dropped a close game 59-53 to defending Class 3A state champion Sumter County last Saturday night in York.

"They are still adjusting to the system," Coach Kendrick Davis said. "As soon as they start making the defensive traps work and realize how to use their athletic ability, things will start clicking. Plus we have to get back on defense in transition play."

Ben Burroughs led the attack with 19 points, including four 3- pointers. Deforrest Taite had 14 points. Justin Burroughs added 10 points.

Last Friday CCHS opened the 2006-07 season by beating the Cougars of Livingston 60-55 in Grove Hill.

J. Burroughs had 20 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Bulldogs. Taite had 13 points. Duane Owens and B. Burroughs each had eight points.

CCHS returns to the court this Friday when they travel to Butler to play Jackson in the first round of the Choctaw County Holiday Invitational at 4 p.m.

They will be back home on Nov. 28 when they take on Demopolis.

The Clarke County High School Lady Bulldogs opened the 2006-07 season by winning their first two games last weekend.

They traveled to York Saturday night and beat Sumter County 45- 40 to gain a certain amount of revenge on the team that prevented CCHS from going to the regionals.

Erica Moore had 18 points, nine rebounds, six steals and three assists. Kierra Ezell added six points. Minetre Martin had six points and six rebounds. Kiara Gildersleeve had six points. Stephanie Robinson pulled down seven rebounds.

Last Friday the Lady Bulldogs beat Livingston 62-44 to win the home opener.

Moore had 23 points, six steals and six assists. Robinson had 11 points and 11 rebounds as well as five steals. Ciara Pendleton had eight rebounds.

"We have to cut down on turnovers," Coach Tori Johnson said. "But they play so hard and some of the turnovers come from playing so hard and trying hard.

They return to the court this Friday when they travel to Butler to play Jackson in the Choctaw County Holiday Invitational at 2 p.m.
