LHS Bears bounce Indians from playoffs
By Ross Wood

Johnny Williams finds running room against Loachapoka last Friday night in the Bears' 13-7 playoff win..
The Leroy Bears used a ballcontrol offense to hold off the Indians of Loachapoka 13-7 this past Friday night in the second round of the Class 2A state football playoffs at Palmer Stadium.

After forcing the Indians to punt the ball with 6:52 remaining in the contest the Bears started at their 25-yard line and was able to run out the clock as they knelt on the ball at the Loachapoka 2-yard line.

In the time-consuming drive Ronald Bracy had runs of 7- and 3-yards, Detrik Powell had runs of 13- and 8-yards while QB Clint Moseley had carries for 18-, 10-, 12- and 14-yards.

Leroy attempted a 34-yard field goal with 3:20 left in the first quarter, but the kick was no good.

But midway through the second quarter the Bears did hit paydirt when Powell scored on a 10-yard run.

Paul Gartman kicked the PAT and the Bears led 7-0 with 6:59 to go before halftime.

With almost the exact time left in the third period Leroy added to their lead when Powell scored on a 5-yard plunge. This time the kick failed but the Bears had a 13-0 lead with 6:58 to go in the frame.

The Indians cut into the lead with :31 left in the period when Terrance Webb hit Michael Walden with a 42-yard scoring strike. Webb kicked the PAT to make it 13-7.

That would be as close as the Indians would get and Leroy's final drive clinched the second win 13-7.

Moseley led all rushers with 102 yards on 10 carries. Powell added 90 yards on 13 carries and two scores. Bracy had 84 yards on 15 carries.

This Friday the Bears will take to the road as they travel across the state to take on the Lanett Panthers.

Game time at Panther Stadium is 7 p.m.
