Purple Cats blue after loss to Sweet Water
The Purple Cats took the early lead as they turned a Bulldog fumble into good field position. They took the ball and went 30- yards to paydirt. James Edmonds capped the drive with a 4-yard plunge. Justin Mathers kicked the PAT to give Ariton a 7-0 with 4:06 left in the first. The Bulldogs returned the favor when Drew Luker picked off a Purple Cat pass at the 22- yard line. Two plays later Dominic Holt powered in from 4-yards out. Ty Glass kicked the PAT to tie the game at 7-7 with 2:15 left in the period. On the ensuing possession Mike Robinson intercepted a pass for SWHS. Anthony Landrum capped the short drive with a 32-yard sprint. Glass' kick was true and Sweet Water had the lead for good 14- 7 with :29 to go in the period. Sweet Water's defense forced a punt on the next Ariton drive and the Bulldogs took over near midfield. Drew Luker called his own number and raced 34-yards to paydirt. The kick from Glass was good and Sweet Water had a 21-7 lead with 9:21left in the half. The next Purple Cat possession ended with a punt and SWHS started at the 46-yard line. In a drive where the Bulldogs converted a fourth and three play, Landrum capped it with a dash from 6-yards out. Glass made the kick and Sweet Water had a 28-7 stranglehold with 4:05 left in the second quarter. Paul Lynn stepped up for the Bulldogs on the ensuing Ariton possession as the senior blocked the Purple Cat punt and SWHS took over at the 15-yard line. Two plays later Holt powered in from 2-yards out. Glass remained perfect on his kicks as the Bulldogs increased their lead to 35-7 with 1:48 left in the frame. Luker ended the final Ariton possession of the half with an interception at the Bulldog 2- yard line. Sweet Water took their first possession of the second half and drove 64-yards in nine plays, including a converted fake punt near mid-field, to hit paydirt. Luker scored on the 1-yard sneak and Glass made the kick to add to the Bulldog lead 42-7 with 7:12 left in the third period. In the fourth quarter Sweet Water topped-off the game's scoring when Landrum ran in from 10-yards out. Glass kicked the point-after touchdown and the Bulldogs won 49-7. Landrum led all rushers with 111 yards on 15 carries and three scores. Holt had 100 yards on 15 carries and two TDs. Luker added 35 yards on three carries with a pair of touchdowns. The Bulldog defense limited the Purple Cats to just 124 yards in total offense with Robinson leading the way with six stops and an interception. Luker had six stops and two interceptions. Jacgues Lockett had seven stops and an interception. The Bulldogs advance to the quarter-finals this week and they host region foe Sunshine. The Tigers knocked off Wadley 16- 14 last week. Sweet Water beat Sunshine 68-14 in their previous meeting this season. Regardless of who wins between Brantley and Maplesville in the other South bracket game, the Bulldogs will be on the road, if they win, in the semi-finals.
