'Big Red' catches burglary suspect
On the evening of Nov. 20. Corporal Ron Baggett with the Clarke County Sheriff's Department saw Lewis Edward Hill walking down Old Line Road. The sheriff's department had several warrants on Hill. "I jumped out of my car and caught him. He resisted and fought me about 15 minutes. I shot him with the taser, which he tried to take away from me. He continued to resist and he broke free and ran," Baggett said. Hill was caught and broke free several times and even attempted to hit Baggett with a deer skinning rack. During one of the altercations Hill slipped out of his shirt to get away. After several attempts to subdue Hill Baggett called for aid from other officers. Those responding included Investigator Vergil Chapman and Deputy Larry Gene Sheffield with the Clarke County Sheriff's Department, Chief Billy Hicks with Thomasville Police Department, agents with the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, Alfred Carter with the 35th Judicial Task Force and Paul Newton and Ronnie Nelson with Fulton's Big Red. Newton owns the dog and Nelson is his handler. Hill was last seen running behind the pastorium at Salem Hill Church. Big Red was given Hill's shirt and then began tracking him. He first found Hill's shoes and then found Hill crawling through the brush behind the church. Once he was caught Hill informed the officers, "You wouldn't have never caught me if you hadn't had that big old dog." Hill allegedly took a deer skinning rack, heated socks, a heater and allegedly attempted to take a bag of kitchen utensils from the camp houses which were burglarized. Hill was charged with resisting arrest, possession/use of drug paraphernalia, escape, first degree, assault, second degree of a police officer, two counts burglary, third degree, probation violation, failure to appear on child support, failure to appear on possession of cocaine, possession of forged instrument, second degree and possession of forged instrument. His bond was set at $62,500. Other arrests Other arrests booked through the Clarke County Jail include: Rafphel Deontario Blackmon, 19, DUI, $1,000 bond, arrested by Thomasville Police Dept. Murphy Dewayne Collier, 43, possession of controlled substance, driving while license suspended, arrested by Jackson Police Dept. Tommy Dwayne Cox, 34, possession of forged instrument, $2,500 bond, arrested by Clarke County Sheriff's Dept. Altonia Jamal Glenn, 21, burglary, first degree, robbery, second degree, $45,000 bond, arrested by Clarke County Sheriff's Dept. Tolle Ivory Jr., 74, DUI, $1,000 bond, arrested by Alabama Marine Police. Jerime D. Jenkins, 27, possession of controlled substance, arrested by Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. Marcus Daniel McKinley, 22, bad checks, $500 bond, arrested by Grove Hill Police Dept. Ansel Darnell Portis, 29, driving while license suspended, arrested by Clarke County Sheriff's Dept. Fred Earl Portis, 47, domestic violence, second degree, arrested by Clarke County Sheriff's Dept. Mary Elizabeth Portis, 47, domestic violence, second degree, arrested by Clarke County Sheriff's Dept. Trevor Lamont Pugh, 19, burglary, first degree, resisting arrest, $31,500 bond, arrested by Clarke County Sheriff's Dept. Johnathan Andrew Smith, 23, DUI, $1,000 bond, arrested by Coffeeville Police Dept. Sidney Taylor, 47, harassment, $500 bond, arrested by Clarke County Sheriff's Dept.
