Tigers beat Trinity, advance to semi's
The defense forced the Wildcats into five turnovers, three interceptions and two fumbles, and also blocked a punt that turned into two scoring opportunities for the Thomasville offensive unit. The Wildcats came out firing on all cylinders as they scored in three plays when QB Whit Mitchell hit William Van Hoosier with a 66- yard touchdown pass. Drew Stokley kicked the PAT and Trinity had a 7-0 lead with 10:22 to play in the first. Thomasville moved the ball but was forced to punt on the ensuing possession. The Wildcats, starting at their own 14-yard line, moved downfield and capped the long drive when Zack Shaw scored on a 4- yard dive. Stokley's kick was again good and Trinity held a 14-0 lead with 1:18 to play in the opening stanza. Thomasville then got to work as they took the next possession and marched to paydirt. QB Jake Overstreet hit Tysean Thompson with a 19-yard gain to put the ball at the Trinity 5-yard line. Two plays later Overstreet scored on a 1-yard sneak. Henrique Aguliar kicked the PAT to draw Thomasville closer 14- 7. Thomasville's defense forced the Wildcats to punt after three plays and the Tigers offense was back in business at their own 36-yard line. Delvonte Harris had runs of 4- and 14-yards and Alex Buford added dashes of 15- and 18-yards, with the last going for the Thomasville touchdown. Aguliar kicked the PATand tied the game at 14-14 with 8:02 left in the half. Neither team was able to score again in the half and at the break the score was still knotted at 14-14. In the third quarter the opposing defenses held the offenses at bay but in the fourth frame Thomasville was able to put together a scoring drive. Starting at their own 24-yard line, the Tigers started moving. Facing third-and-11, Overstreet hit tight end Andrew Parten with a 35-yard gain to move the ball into Wildcat territory. From there James White had a 21-yard run, Harris had a 21-yard dash and then White capped it with a 22-yard scoring sprint. Aguliar's kick made it 21-14 with 6:52 to go in the game. Trinity got the ball and started a march of their own. With the ball on the Tiger 20-yard line, Trinity's Mitchell tossed a pass that Thomasville's Thompson intercepted at the 18-yard line and returned it to the Wildcat 17-yard line. Harris ended the short drive with THS 28, Trinity 14 a 3-yard dive. The kick from Aguliar was good and with :47 left in the game Thomasville had a 28- 14 lead. One last ditch effort from Trinity ended when Thompson intercepted the pass at midfield, sealing the Tiger's 28-14 quarter-final win. Buford paced the Thomasville attack with 88 yards on 11 carries. White had 54 yards on six carries. Harris had 36 yards on 14 carries. Overstreet was 7-of-12 passing for 101 yards and an interception. This Friday the Tigers (12-1) advance to the semi-finals as they travel to Andalusia to take on the Bulldogs (10-3). Andalusia beat Elmore County 16-14 last week.
