Choctaw Sheriff Don Lolley to become DA investigator
By Jim Cox

Lolley
Choctaw County Sheriff Don Lolley may be turning in his sheriff's badge come January, but the veteran lawman isn't ready to give up the profession he loves.

Lolley was feted with a dinner Saturday night at the Gilbertown Masonic Lodge where he has been a longtime member. It may have been billed as a retirement affair but both Lolley as well as First Judicial Circuit District Attorney Spence Walker announced that Lolley would start working with the DA as a part-time investigator. The job was made possible by a special grant to combat methamphetamine use the office received through a congressional appropriation.

“His primary duty will be investigating drugs in the threecounty circuit but he may be called upon to work other cases, too,” said DAWalker.

Walker said Monday that Lolley was an “excellent lawman with superb investigative skills” and said he was glad that he was joining the DA staff.

Lolley joked he couldn't retire. “My wife has too long of a honey-do list for me if I go home,” he said. Asked if he intended to take a break between jobs, he said, “I might take two or three hours off.”

Seriously, Lolley said he was looking forward to his new job. He said he didn't know exactly what it would involve. “I'm going to be available to do whatever the DA asks me to do,” he said.

The circuit includes Choctaw, Clarke and Washington counties.

Alarge number of elected officials, fellow law officers and friends from a multi-county area enjoyed dinner with Lolley Saturday night.

Lolley was first elected sheriff in 1974 and chose not to seek reelection this year. He will complete 32 years as sheriff when he steps down next month.

James Lovette, a former chief deputy under Lolley, was elected this year and will be sworn in as the county's new sheriff on Jan. 15.
