Thomasville’s wet-dry fire doesn’t need extra kindling

Alcohol debates can inflame people more than any other public issue. Look at Thomasville as an example.

Alocal law was passed last year that will allow Thomasville citizens to decide in a referendum whether or not to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages within the municipality. Jackson and Monroeville got similar laws passed and voted in alcohol sales last year.

Thomasville’s situation was a little complicated in that it had no overall zoning ordinance. One needed to be passed before alcohol was considered. Thomasville has been talking about a zoning ordinance for years now—the alcohol debate just helped to push it through.

At the same meeting a more specific law governing alcohol sales and regulation was presented, not for passage but for the council to consider at a later date.

However, the rumors got out that the council would not only pass the alcohol ordinance but vote in legalized sales as well, bypassing any vote by Thomasville citizens.

There is no way that the Thomasville City Council can vote in alcohol sales. A vote of the majority of Thomasville’s registered voters in a referendum is required for that to happen. A referendum is apparently not even close to happening. A petition from citizens requesting one will have to be presented to the council and a date set. That isn’t likely to happen until sometime in the early spring, many suggest.

This is a serious matter and a volatile one. It is hot enough without adding rumors and untruths to the mix.

Please, Thomasville citizens, debate this issue on a high playing field. Regardless of the outcome, wet or dry, you are all going to have to continue living and working together after you have decided the issue at the polls.
