SWHS runs over MHS
“Our offensive line showed a lot of pride,” Coach Stacy Luker said. “In the second half we said we were going to line up and go headto head with them. I could not be more proud of a group.” The two teams traded possession throughout the first half but neither team was able to crack the endzone. In the third quarter the Bulldogs got the ball first and in 13 plays, all on the ground, drove 68-yards to hit paydirt. Senior fullback Dominic Holt capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge. The kick was blocked but Sweet Water still led 6-0 with 5:17 to go in the third quarter. Maplesville tried to answer the score but turned the ball over on downs at the Bulldog 13-yard line. From there Sweet Water’s offense went back to work as they again cut through the Red Devil defense with their potent ground attack.
Maplesville, in an attempt to get on the scoreboard, faked a punt near mid-field on the ensuing possession, but Antonio Landrum picked off the pass at the Bulldog 31-yard line. The Sweet Water offense again powered their way through the Maplesville defense to move to paydirt with Holt capping the drive on a 10-yard sprint. Ty Glass kicked the PAT, making it 21-0 with 3:30 left to play. The Red Devils cut into the lead on the following possession as John Andrews tossed a 5-yard scoring pass to Rod Nix. The try for two came up short but the Bulldogs still led 21-6 with 2:56 left in the final stanza. The Red Devils made two attempts at an on-side kick, but penalties on each try kept backing the ball up. Sweet Water finally took possession after the final kick went out of bounds at the 47-yard line. Landrum broke free for a 27- yard score to put the final touches on the game. Glass’ kick was good and the Bulldogs won 28-6. The tandem of Holt and Landrum helped lead an attack that cut through Maplesville for over 400 yards on the ground. Landrum had 224 yards on 30 carries and a pair of TDs. Holt added 169 on 20 totes as well as two touchdowns. This Saturday the Bulldogs (12- 1) travel to Birmingham to take on Cedar Bluff in the Class 1A state championship game. The Tigers (13-1) beat Ragland 36-14 last Friday night. They are quarterbacked by Jamie Hampton, who has committed to play at Purdue in the Big 10. “He is as cool as the other side of the pillow,” Luke said of the QB. “He is a big left-hander who makes really good throws.” So far in the playoffs the Bulldogs have won by an average of 45-5 as they have beaten: Millry 48-7; Ariton 49-7; Sunshine 55-0; and Maplesville 28-6. Cedar Bluff has won by an average of 34.5-18.3 in beating Appalachian 55-20, R.A. Hubbard 19-14; Donaho 28-25 and Ragland 36-14.
