Riley awards grants to improve recreation in Southwest Alabama

Gov. Bob Riley has awarded grants totaling more than $150,000 to improve recreational opportunities in three southwest Alabama counties. Funds will be used to construct or renovate recreational trails in the towns of Gilbertown, Fulton and Excel.

“Recreational trails encourage Alabamians to take part in activities and the trails make our cities and towns better places to live,” Riley said. “I am pleased to play a role in these projects.”

Riley awarded $79,800 to resurface a 1,950-foot-long trail in Gilbertown and providing lighting along the trail. The town is providing local funding of $19,950.

Fulton was awarded a $30,000 grant to construct an 8-foot-wide trail at Fulton Recreational Park. Local funding of $7,500 has been committed to the project.

A $43,240 grant was awarded to construct a 3,465-foot-long trail at Excel’s Murphy Park. The town will supply $10,810 in local funding for the project.

Riley notified mayors Robert Graham of Gilbertown, Mike Norris of Fulton and Jenny Countryman of Excel that the grant had been approved.

The grants are being administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. They were awarded from funds made available to the state from the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreational Trails Program.
