Parks and rec board funds over $275,000 in projects A special Clarke County tobacco tax put on for parks and recreation has funded over $275,000 in projects in four years, one of the board members told county commissioners Monday. Debra Bolen heads the economic development office but also serves on the Parks and Recreation Board. She told commissioners that the board received $347,809.64 in tobacco tax funds since the tax was implemented in 2002. With modest interest, the total revenues neared $349,000. The board has funded or committed to fund $275,418.17 in projects. When all of the commitments are paid out, there will be a $73,000 balance in the fund. The board has agreed not to allow the balance to drop below $60,000 so that leaves about $13,000 in available funds, Bolen explained. The board accepts projects from organized, incorporated groups that can prove that they can maintain projects and improvements that they request. The board will fund up to 50 percent of a project and will consider in-kind work as a match. Only public facilities and properties are funded. Completed and active projects since allocations started include: Clarke County High School football stadium, $20,000. Completed. Jackson High School baseball field, $15,000. Completed. Grove Hill Elementary School playground, $14,628. Completed. Town of Grove Hill Hudson Park fence repair, $9,790.17. Completed. Jackson High School Legion Field restrooms, $20,000. Completed.
