Lose weight for a more healthy life What would you do if you found you were walking around with a silent killer? Approximately one in three American adults are doing just that. They have high blood pressure and don’t know it because most of the time high blood pressure has no symptoms. That is why it is called the “silent killer.” Untreated, or poorly managed, high blood pressure increases your risk for heart disease, stroke and even kidney problems. Many times people with high blood pressure are told by their health care professional that they must lose weight and increase their level of physical activity. These recommendations are not always easy to follow. However, long-term studies have shown that losing as little as 10 pounds can lower blood pressure a few points. Losing weight and increasing physical activity levels are endeavors that are easier to
achieve if you can do them with a group of co-workers, friends or family members who have the same goals. Alabama’s hospitals and the Alabama Department of Public Health are offering an opportunity to help you get started. It’s an eight-week, weightloss program called “Scale Back Alabama.” If you are a member of a business call Cindy Greene at 251-3191, ext. 701 to get more information and to sign up. The program is free.
