Editor’s Notes
Up in C h i l t o n C o u n t y (where they grow those great peaches), they had a heck of a sheriff’s race. In the Nov. 7 balloting, Maplesville Police Chief Kevin Davis polled 6,011 votes to incumbent Sheriff Billy Wayne Fulmer’s 6,000. When the provisional ballots were counted a week later, Davis held a 13-vote lead—6,016 to 6,003. A recount was held and a few more votes were found but Davis still won, 6,024 to 6,015. That’s a difference of nine votes. I don’t know either man but I’d bet there were at least 10 people who would have voted for Sheriff Fulmer but for some reason or other they didn’t make it to the polls on election day. Voting is a privilege, not a right. It is also an obligation, the price we pay to maintain a free and democratic society. Hauling $1 million The Mobile paper had a story Wednesday morning about a routine traffic stop on Interstate 10 in Baldwin County Sunday. A state trooper stopped a pickup truck under suspicion of speeding. After the truck was stopped, the trooper became more suspicious and called in a drugsniffing dog. The dog “alerted” and a search found $1 million in cash inside a hidden compartment. The pickup had a Washington state tag. Troopers did not elaborate on the details or release the man’s name. Understandably though, they do think the money is “dirty.” As Tom Wade of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency noted, “Normal people do not move money across state lines in a pickup truck. Think of how much interest you would be losing by hauling it around in a pickup truck each day.” If the guy had been driving the speed limit, or close to it, he probably would not have been stopped. Beware those chat rooms Here’s another interesting news item, terrible but interesting. A jury up in Colbert County has recommended the death penalty for Kim VanPelt, 45, who was convicted of capital murder in the death of his wife, Sandra Ozment VanPelt, 40. She was from Michigan and the two had met through an Internet chat room. They had been married only 13 days when her body was found in a wooded area. She died from a head injury and suffocation. VanPelt had taken out a $300,000 life insurance policy on her right after they married. Great gift idea Don’t forget, Grove Hill native Mary Chapman Mathews will be home signing copies of her republished book, “A Mansion’s Memories” Monday, Dec. 18 from noon until 2 p.m. at the Clarke County Museum. The book is about the President’s Mansion at the University of Alabama. David and Mary Mathews lived there back in the 1970s when he was UA president and Mary wrote the book in 1980. She’s updated it and new color photographs have been included. It’d make a great Christmas gift. You probably wouldn’t want to buy it for an Auburn Tiger fan though. Jumping Jack Flash The Coxes don’t have good luck in the dog department. Last Sunday afternoon, Dec. 3, Suzanne’s and Maggie’s longhaired Chihuahua, “Jumping Jack Flash” was run over and killed in front of the house by a passing car. I understand the dog shouldn’t have been in the road, but the driver knew he had hit it and could have stopped. But they didn’t. Jack was supposed to be Maggie’s dog but Suzanne turned out to be his favorite and she in turn adored him. I know Maggie rated above Jack with Suzanne but I never dared asked where I placed in the pecking order. Needless to say, both the ladies in my life have been devastated by Jack’s passing. Admittedly, I miss him too. He was a sweet puppy. I fussed at him but he knew I was the softie. At suppertime he’d sit and beg beside my chair. He got his name because he could flat foot jump at least twice his length. He would bounce up and down beside the table like a jack-in-the-box until I relented and gave him a morsel. He slept on the foot of our bed and I fussed about that constantly but now I miss that little extra weight on the covers. The other night I had a dream that he was padding up the bed as he sometimes would. I actually felt his steps, it was so real. We had a fenced backyard but lately he had been finding holes and getting out. He always thought it was a game to run and play once he was out. I worried that this day would come and it did.
I know you shouldn’t get so attached to an animal but it happens. Jumping Jack Flash is missed in the Cox household.
