Victorious and valiant efforts
It was the school’s second title in three years and their sixth overall. The Bulldog defense held the prolific Cedar Bluff offense to minus-24 yards rushing and only 78 yards in total offense. One of the only times Sweet Water was stopped was on their first possession but Antonio Landrum’s 55-yard punt sent the Tigers back to their own 16-yard line. Six into the drive Butch Williams’ picked off Cedar Bluff QB Jamie Hampton’s pass near midfield and returned it to the Tiger 33-yard line. The Wing-T attack then took over as Drew Luker tossed a 32- yard completion to Scottie Nelson to set the ball on the 1-yard line. On the next snap senior fullback Dominic Holt dove over the top for the game’s first score. Ty Glass, who set a Super Six record with six extra points, made the kick and with 3:23 left in the first, Sweet Water led 7-0. On the ensuing Tiger possession Anthony Landrum, the game’s MVP, picked-off Hampton’s pass at the Cedar Bluff 34-yard line. Again the Bulldogs went to the air as Luker connected with Antnio Landrum for a 9-yard TD strike to cap the short drive. Glass made the kick and the Bulldogs had a 14-0 lead with 10:22 left in the half. Sweet Water’s defense shut down the Tigers and forced a punt and the Bulldogs took over at the CBHS 36-yard line. The Luker to Nelson passing combination worked for a 20-yard completion to help move the ball to paydirt. Holt capped the drive with a 4- yard run. With Glass’ kick the Bulldogs led 21-0 with 6:53 to go in the first half. Sweet Water got one more shot at the endzone in the first half after Cedar Bluff turned the ball over on downs near midfield with :45 seconds left. Three plays later Luker tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Landrum. Glass converted the point-after touchdown as Sweet Water took a 28-0 lead into the break. “I wasn’t pleased with our running of the football in the first half,” Coach Stacy Luker said. “I didn’t think the offensive line played as well as they could have, but they played a lot better in the second half, that is probably why we won this game.” The second half was not much kinder to Cedar Bluff as Sweet Water took the first possession and drove 58-yards for the score. Anthony Landrum capped the drive with a 4-yard run. Glass’ kick was again good and the Bulldogs tightened the stranglehold 35-0. With the lead SWHS never attempted a pass in the second half, and on their next drive they went 68-yards in 12 plays with Holt finishing it with a 2-yard run. Glass converted the PAT as the Bulldogs increased the lead to 42- 0 with 8:08 left in the game. On the second play of the ensuing Cedar Bluff drive, Luker intercepted the pass at midfield, giving the ball back to the Bulldogs. In just nine plays Sweet Water ended the game’s scoring when Johnny Lockett ran in from 9- yards out. The attempt failed but the Bulldogs had a 48-0 lead with just 3:46 left in the game. Sweet Water forced a punt on the Tiger’s final possession and then ran out the clock preserving the 48-0 win and championship. The Bulldogs have never lost a championship game in which they have scored more than a touchdown. On the game Anthony Landrum had 142 yards on 25 carries and one score. Holt added 65 yards on 18 carries and three TDs. Luker was 5-of-6 passing for 98 yards and two TDs, all in the first half.
Anthony Landrum was named the game’s MVP for the second time in three years as well. He is the only person to have earned the honor.
