The Thomasville Tigers never quit fighting as they fell 28-27 to the Guntersville Tigers on the coldest night in 110 years in Birmingham in the Class 4A finals last Thursday night.

The temperature by the time game ended had dipped down to 18 degrees with a wild-chill factor of 10 degrees.

In the game the Tigers set a new Super Six record, in all classes as they rushed for 421 yards. They set a new Seper Six record with 60 rushing attempts and defensively they held Guntersville to just 38 yards on the ground.

“We didn’t make the plays we needed to,” Coach Jack Hankins said. “We came up short. We had been able to overcome every obstacle…we battled through injuries, but tonight we came up short.”

Thomasville forced Guntersville to punt on their first possession and the offense took over at GHS 47-yard line.

After Alex Buford rushed for 18-yards and Delvonte Harris rushed for 16-yards, Thomasville had the ball at the 4-yard line.

On the next play sophomore James White covered the distance for the score. Henrique Aguair kicked the PAT and Thomasville had a 7-0 lead with 9:30 left in the first quarter.

Guntersville tied the game on the first play of the second quarter when Chaz Rogers, the game’s MVP, hit Trevor Diamond with a 24-yard TD pass. Joel Svensson kicked the PAT knotting the game at 7-7 with 11:51 to go before halftime.

The two squads traded possessions when Thomasville took over at their own 29-yard line following a punt.

Buford broke free for a 36-yard run to set up White’s 35-yard scoring scamper as he slipped through on a trap play.

Aguair kicked the point-after touchdown, giving the Tigers a 14-7 lead with 5:04 to go before the break.

Guntersville was able to take the ensuing possession and tie the game again as Rogers flipped a 15-yard scoring pass to Shannon Cahill.

Svensson’s kick tied the game at 14-14 with 2:39 to go in the second quarter.

In the second half Guntersville took advantage of a Thomasville fumble at their own 34-yard line and took the lead when Rogers threw a TD pass to Tucker Bridges covering the entire distance. Svensson made the kick and GHS had a 21-14 lead with 10:31 left in the third quarter.

Thomasville responded on the next possession when Buford scored on a 3-yard dive. In the scoring drive QB Jake Overstreet converted a third-and-11 play with an 18-yard run.

Aguair’s kick tied the game again at 21- 21 with 5:45 left in the period.

Thomasville defense made a huge stop and forced a punt. The offense was able to take the change of possession and turn it into points.

Overstreet broke three tackles in capping the drive with a 12-yard keeper. The kick was no good, but Thomasville had a 27-21 lead with 1:51 left in the third.

In the final frame Guntersville hit a big 56-yard gain to move deep inside Thomasville territory. Josh Gunther ended the drive with a 2-yard run. Svensson kicked the PAT and Guntersville led 28-27 with 5:50 left in the game.

The Tigers got the ball and drove to the GHS 16-yard line where the drive stalled. From there Aguair’s 33-yard field goal attempt came up short with 2:45 left on the clock.

Thomasville got one more shot as they drove from their own 40-yard line to the GHS 30-yard line before an interception at the 4-yard line ended any hopes and Guntersville held on to win 28-27.

“You don’t miss extra points and win championships, you don’t miss field goals and win championships,” Hankins said. “We had our chances and missed them.

“No one celebrates being the runner up,” he added. “You come here to win championships. But I am extremely proud of the way our guys never quit fighting and the courage they showed all season. I am proud of them all.”

Buford led all rushers with 151 yards on 19 carries. Overstreet added 122 yards on 17 carries. Harris had 94 yards on 18 totes. White added 54 yards on six carries.

Katrell Watters led the defense with 13 tackles. Shed Simmons and Jarrell Watters each had seven tackles. Justin Smith added six tackles.

The Tigers season ends with a 13- 2 record.
