Jackson councilman serving in Iraq home for holidays

Jackson
J a c k s o n City Council m a n A n t h o n y Jackson was w e l c o m e d home for the holidays by other members of the city’s governing body Tuesday.

Jackson is currently on active duty with the U.S. Army and has been absent from council meetings for the last couple of months.

“We are glad to see you home,” said Mayor Richard Long during Tuesday’s council meeting, which was the last meeting of 2006. “We are very proud of you and if there is anything the city can do for you and your family, while you are home and after you leave, just let us know.”

During his comments to the council, Mayor Long reiterated that Walgreens will be attending the first meeting of the city’s planning commission in January to go over its plans.

Councilman Daron Bolen reported that the planning commission conducted a public hearing earlier to consider a request to change the city’s zoning ordinance in R2 (residential) areas for businesses on a discretionary basis. He said 10 citizens spoke against the measure while one was in favor of it. “Based on the results of that hearing, the planning commission recommends that the council not approve this request,” said Bolen.

Mayor Long said a public hearing would be held prior to the first council meeting in January before considering the planning commission’s recommendation.
