AEC Plant Lowman workers celebrate four years of safety

Gary Smith (left), AEC president and CEO, presents Plant Manager Henry Ott with a plaque congratulating Lowman employees on their recent safety milestone. In the last year, employees worked a total of 331,000 hours with no lost-time accidents.
Employees at Alabama Electric Cooperative, Inc.’s (AEC) Plant Lowman reached a safety landmark in October, celebrating more than four years without a lost-time injury. Those four years represent more than 1.3 million working hours, 331,000 of which occurred during the past year.

There are 164 full-time employees at Plant Lowman.

Employees were honored with a celebration luncheon Dec. 8.

“Lowman employees are to be commended for their commitment to safety,” says Buddy Manring, AEC safety coordinator. “Many employees work under less-than-optimal conditions, and it is essential that they constantly make conscious decisions when it comes to safety.”

Located on the Tombigbee River near Leroy, the Charles R. Lowman Power Plant is AEC’s primary generating source. With its three coal-fired generating units, Plant Lowman’s generating capacity equals 556 megawatts.

AEC, a Touchstone Energy(r) Cooperative headquartered in Andalusia, generates and transmits wholesale electricity to 16 distribution cooperatives and four municipalities in south and central Alabama and northwest Florida. AEC’s 20 distribution members provide reliable, affordable, environmentally sound energy to more than 380,000 consumers in 39 counties in Alabama and 10 counties in northwest Florida.
