School board members hear updates on new school, other construction
By Kathryn F. Pickard

Clarke County Superintendent of Education Gerald Stephens reported on several construction projects for the system during Thursday’s meeting.

Shingles have been put on at the new Clarke County High School building, which will enable crews to begin work on the inside of the building now.

A lot of dirt has been moved at the sports complex site in Grove Hill and the baseball and softball fields will be ready for use in 2008.

The new lunch room at Jackson Middle School has been completed and an open house is being planned.

An open house was held at the new band room and fine arts building at Jackson High School, which Stephens said he felt would add a lot to the program at the school.

Personnel

Catastrophic sick leave was approved for Shonda Bass, a teacher at Gillmore Elementary School.

Family medical leave was approved for Becky Garrick, an alternative school director at Wilson Hall Middle School and for Jami Wilson, a teacher at Gillmore Elementary School.

Linda Slayton was hired to teach a calculus and algebra connections classes at Clarke County High School.

Other business

Board members were given copies of the Parent Involvement

Policy, the English as a Second Language Policy and the Dispute Resolution Policy regarding the enrollment of Homeless Children and Youth, to look over before the next meeting.

Payments of bills, accounts and payroll in the amount of $2,342,602.28 for October and $2,552,344.69 for the month of November were approved.

Custodian of funds Carmen Rotch reported the audit for this year had been completed and there had been no findings.

Stephens made note of the system’s web page and encouraged the public to view it. The address is www.clarkecounty.schoolinsites. com.

The next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 25 at 4 p.m.
