Overstreet, Holt bring home POY awards
All six classes in the Alabama High School Athletic Association as well the AISA have a back and lineman winner. Holt, who helped lead the Bulldogs to their second state crown in three years was named the Lineman of the Year in Class 1A, beating out Cedar Bluff’ Austin Hayes and Brantley’s Jeffrey Daniels. Overstreet, who just missed winning a title with the Tigers, beat out Alexandria’s Jake Welch and Dora’s Marques Chapel for the Class 4A back of the Year award. Other area athletes who were finalists were: Sweet Water running back Anthony Landrum, who was edged out by Wadley’s Terrance Wilkes. Wilkes was killed in a drive-by shooting the Saturday after his team was beaten by Sunshine in the playoffs. Jamie Hampton of Cedar Bluff was the other finalist. Southern Choctaw’s Terrell Johnson, a linebacker who committed to Mississippi State, was edged by Lineville’s Devon Hayes for the Class 2A Lineman of the Year award. Houston Academy’s Davis Flowers was the third finalist. The last area finalist was Derek Conner from South Choctaw Academy. The senior running back was edged by Bessemer’s Walter Arrington for the AISA Back of the Year. Cody Owens, a wide receiver from Kingwood Christian was the third finalist. Prattville QB Larry Smith was named the Class 6A Back of the Year as well being the state’s Mr. Football after leading the Lions to the championship in 35-21 win over Hoover. Other winners include Class 2A back Stanley Jones, Houston Academy; Class 3A Back Zach Smith, Susan Moore; Class 3A Lineman Jhrron Spencer, Sumter County; Class 4A Lineman Jared Cooper, W.S. Neal; Class 5A Back Rob Ezell, Athens High; Class 5A Lineman Alfred McCullough, Athens High; Class 6A Lineman Ryan Pugh, Hoover. Since the award started being presented in 1998 there have been 39 finalists in the various classes with 12 winners coming from that group. Coffeeville’s Anthony Dunning was a 3-time finalist before winning the award in 2004. Southern Choctaw’s Spencer Johnson is the only 2-time winner, getting the award in 1998 and 1999.
The winners and finalists are chosen by a panel of high school writers from across the state.
