Medicare sales reps investigated for fraud Advantage Freedom, an insurance company that offers Medicare supplements, has ordered that all insurance sales in the Clarke County area cease until an investigation into possible fraudulent sales is complete. One man has already been arrested and other alleged sales persons are being investigated. The Clarke County Sheriff’s Department received several calls last week about representatives coming to residents’ homes offering to sell them supplemental insurance. “What was strange is that there were several different companies, all in this area at the same time, but they all claim to be part of the Advantage Freedom company,” Corporal Ron Baggett said. Two subjects were questioned on Thursday. When Baggett learned they did not have a license to sell insurance in Alabama he ordered them not to come to Clarke County without one. The following day one of the subjects, Dennis Heidleberg, called a woman in Coffeeville and made an appointment to meet with her and discuss insurance. When he arrived Baggett and Coffeeville Police Chief Clint Harrell were waiting on him. He was charged with selling insurance without a license and it is possible he will be charged with identity theft. “These people are getting personal information they can use to obtain credit, open accounts and basically steal, under the names of these victims. If people want to buy insurance they need to make an appointment at an office and check out the company before they fill out any paperwork,” Baggett added.
He said the sheriff’s department as well as Advantage Freedom continue to investigate the matter.
