Over 40 area players named all-state

When the Alabama Sports Writers Association released the 2006 all-state football team over 40 players from this area were part of the six AHSAA classes as well as in the AISA.

That number brings the total named to the annual team to 195 over the last five years.

Sweet Water High School’s Anthony Landrum, one of only two juniors, and Thomasville’s Jake Overstreet were named to the Super 12 team.

The Super 12 squad represents the 12 best football players in the state, reguardless of class.

Headlining the teams are state champions Sweet Water and Leroy with each having five first teamers as well as several honorable mentions.

Beginning with the Class 1A Bulldogs first teamers include running back Anthony Landrum, offensive lineman Wes Burnett, defensive back Drew Luker, linebacker Dominic Holt and defenisve lineman Jacques Lockett.

They are joined by teammates DL Nakia Dennis and placekicker Ty Glass as honorable mentions.

The 2A champion Bears were lead by Coach of the Year Danny Powell.

Johnny Williams, wide reciever; OL Bryan Lankford, Chris Weaver, DB; Craig Weaver, LB; and Seth Headley, DL were all named to the first team.

SWHS’ Landrum
Clint Moseley, Athlete and Ronald Bracy, running back, were named honorable mention.

Thomasville, who just missed winning the Class 4A title, put four on the first team. QB Jake Overstreet, OL Cody Friddle, DB Alex Buford and LB Katrell Watters were voted to the first team.

Delvonte Harris, RB was an honorable mention.

Clarke County High School’s Kenneth Kimbrough was named first team running back in Class 3A. His teammate Duane Owens was named honorable mention.

Jackson High School wide out Demarquis Besteda was named an honorbale mention in Class 4A.

McIntosh, who saw a resurgence this year saw their head coach James Rutherford named Class 1A Coach of the Year.

One of his defensive linemen Brandon Williams was named to the first team. Offensive lineman Ted Reed

was named honorable mention.

Millry High School had two named honorable mention in OL Marvelous Cunningham and Lb Brock Guy.

Southern Choctaw placed Terrell Johnson at first team linebacker while defensive back Jay Johnson was an honorable mention.

CPS’ Dickinson
Fruitdale punter Robby Ballard was named first team in Class 1A.

In the AISA Clarke Prep’s Chad Dickinson was named the first team punter. Adam Jordan, OL, was named honorable mention.

Jackson Academy’s Matt Barnes was named an honorable mention offensive lineman.

Patrician Academy had two named to the honorable mention list: Barry Meeks, RB and Lance Gibson, ATH.

South Choctaw Academy, who finished second Class A saw running back Derek Conner and OL Austin Butler named to teh first team.

Wilcox Academy had Chris Stone, OL; Drew Bozeman, LB named to the first team. Tight end Jack Sims was named an honorable mention.

Other area all-state performers were: Class 1A from Frisco City: 1st - Jeffery Williams, LB; HM - Ephraim Johnson, WR; T.J. Perkins, DL. From A.L. Johnson: 1st team - Aymar Johnson, DL.
