Mary Aquilla Creighton Franklin, 88, of Los Angeles, Calif. died May 3, 2007.
She was born June 11, 1919 in Whatley to the late Thomas and Mary Creighton. She was a member of Indian Ridge Baptist Church. She served on the church's usher board and brotherhood for 40 years. She received her education at Thomasville Normandie Industrial High School. She was self-employed by driving her own personal truck for 10 years carrying the neighborhood children to school. She was later employed by the Clarke County Board of Education as a bus driver for 40 years.
Survivors include her children, Essie Thompson, Margurite Franklin, Patricia (George) Anderson, Los Angeles, Calif., Rosetta Franklin, Carson, Calif., Crissie (Joyce) Franklin, Inglewood, Calif., Lee (Mattie) Franklin, Whatley; one brother, Thomas (Ruth) Creighton Jr., Altadena, Calif.; one sister, Carrie Crear, Los Angeles, Calif.; nephews, nieces, relatives and five close friends, Margurite Bass, Lee Packer, Ruby Mitchell, Chestine Blackman and Veatlas Grant of Whatley; one extended sister, Marjorie Grant and an extended daughter, Denise Martin (Little Lady) of Whatley and a devoted friend, David Crawford, Woodland Hills, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Franklin and two children, Mary Hargress and J.B. Franklin Jr.
The services were May 9 at 5 p.m. at Spalding-La Brea Chapel in Los Angeles, Calif. with Minister Marvis Davis officiating and May 12 at 2 p.m. at Indian Ridge Baptist Church in Whatley with Rev. Johnny Lynum officiating. Burial was in the Indian Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Whatley. Penn Funeral Home of Monroeville also directed.
Active pallbearers were nephews, family and friends.
Honorary pallbearers were Booker T. Creighton, Leonard Martin, Julius English, Winfred Carlton, Connie Pugh Jr., Nathaniel Raine, Clifford Grant, R.C. Fuller, Alphonso Wilson and Hilbert Pendleton.
