Our Opinions Gerald Ford, the 38th president who died last week at the age of 93, has been lauded as a decent man who helped to stabilize the country and the presidency in the aftermath of Watergate. Many referenced his courage in pardoning President Nixon. It was unpopular at the time and it probably cost Ford the presidency but in hindsight most agree it was the right thing to do for the nation. Grove Hill native David Mathews who was Ford's Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare said Ford's greateset legacy was that he viewed himself as a Man from Main Street who truly cared about the nation and its people and always tried to do what he thought was right.
"A Main Street President" is a fitting epitaph that more presidents should seek.
