Mockingbird Tea Party at WHMS
By Cassandra Denson

Finch Family: Kneeling, Drew Solorzano. Back row, Left to Right: Courtney Carter, Zack Watford, Davis Rhodes, and LaQuesha Minniefield
Mrs.Annell Gordon's eightht grade reading class just finished reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee last Friday. On Tuesday, the class held a tea party similar to the one that Aunt Alexandra hosted in the book. Students were each assigned a character from the book to dress up as and a dish to bring. The food had to be food that was mentioned in the book. Students brought ambrosia, peach pickles, charlotte, fried chicken crackling bread, and many more types of Southern foods. The following students portrayed characters from the book: Davis Rhodes was Atticus Finch, Drew Solórzano was Jem Finch, LaQuesha Minniefield was Calpurnia, Courtney Carter was Aunt Alexandra, Zack Watford was Uncle Jack Finch, Jacob Horton was Dill, Kayla Davis was Miss Rachel, Ericka Williams was Miss Maudie, Brooke Hayles was Mrs. Dubose, Justin Etheredge was Boo Radley, Logan Horton was Heck Tate, Georvis Dial was Tom Robinson, Brandon Nettles was Reverend Sykes, Kenya Horn was Miss Stephanie Crawford, Cassandra Denson was Helen Robinson, Natalie Chapman was Mrs. Gates,

Caroline Harvey was Miss Caroline Fisher, Lashonda Scott was Mrs. Farrow, Ashley Foster was Mrs. Perkins, and Gladdesha Pugh was Dolphus Raymond's child. Mrs. Gordon had each one of her students tell a little about his/her character. For example: Georvis (Tom) expressed that he was a hardworking African American man who was found guilty of a crime against Mayella Ewell that he could not have committed. Davis (Atticus) acknowledged that he did not care what others thought of him for defending Tom Robinson because he was just doing the right thing regardless

of race and that he could win the appeal. Mrs. Gordon's students enjoyed the book because it had a special meaning, and each day they were impatient to see what new adventures Scout and Jem had thought of or who Bob Ewell was torturing. "We loved it," said the students after reading the book. This year, Mrs. Gordon's reading class has read "To Kill a Mockingbird" and Rocket Boys. They look forward to reading "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," "The Call of the Wild," and "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
