Who will be new revenue chief?
Gov. Bob Riley will appoint someone when incumbent Jay Duke becomes circuit clerk
By Jim Cox

Jay Duke
Jay Duke is making preparations to move up- upstairs, that is, from the Clarke County Revenue Commissioner's office on the first floor of the courthouse to the Circuit Clerk's office on the second floor- on Jan. 15.

Duke will host a ceremonial swearing-in and reception Monday, Jan. 8 from 3 until 5 p.m. in the main courtroom.

Duke ran for circuit clerk to succeed the retiring Wayne Brunson and was elected Nov. 7. He will be vacating the revenue office with two years left in the term and Gov. Bob Riley will have to appoint someone to the position.

At least three individuals are known to have applied for the appointment.

Sharon Buford of Thomasville is the longtime chief clerk in the revenue office who served under Duke's predecessor, Oudia McIntyre, and has continued during Duke's tenure. Buford ran for the office in 1996, the year Duke was first elected.

Fred Dunagan of the Greenwood community is a retired Child Nutrition Program director for Clarke County public schools and owner of the Greenwood Country Market.

Jamie Wilkins of Jackson is active in Republican politics and the Tombigbee Republican Club. He ran unsuccessfully for revenue commissioner on the GOP ticket in 1996.

The Republican Riley sometimes requests appointees to elected offices to agree to run on the GOP ticket. He has, though, appointed Democrats to some vacancies.
