CALENDAR Clarke County Extension program The Clarke County Extension System and the Clarke County Farmers Federation will sponsor a home garden and orchard production program Thursday, (today), Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Alfa Building in Grove Hill. The program will discuss tomato variety recommendations and selection, soil testing, disease prevention/control in common vegetables as well as updates fruit production. Presentations will be made by Kevan Tucker County Extension Agent/Clarke County and James Miles, Regional Extension Agent-Horticulture. There will be an opportunity to ask any specific questions individuals may have related to problems incurred in their own gardens. HIV Prevention Group meets The Southwest Alabama HIV Prevention Network Group will meet Friday, Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Monroe County Health Department. ADC Prayer breakfast Clarke County Chapter of the Alabama Democratic Conference will have its third year birthday prayer breakfast honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Saturday, Jan. 13 at 8 a.m. at the Jackson Steakhouse. Tickets will be $10. You may contact any member of the Clarke County Chapter of the Alabama Democratic Conference for tickets. Wilcox County District Judge Jo Celeste Pettway will be the guest speaker. Johnnie Byrd is the chairman. Helen Drinkard retiring Mrs. Helen Drinkard, administrative assistant, will be retiring from the Clarke County Extension System after 27 years of dedicated service. Her retirement will be celebrated by friends, family and co-workers on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 2 until 4 p.m. in the assembly room in the basement of the courthouse. Book signing on Fort Mims and Redstick War Gregory Waselkov, author of "A Conquering Spirit" (Fort Mims and the Redstick War of 1813-1814), will discuss the new book and sign copies on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 2:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the Grove Hill United Methodist Church. The cost of the book is $39.95. The event is sponsored by the Clarke County Historical Society and the Grove Hill Public Library. Diabetic support group meets Diabetic Support Group will meet quarterly at the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital. Meeting dates for 2007 are Feb. 1, May 3, Aug. 2 and Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. Diabetes Education is offered at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital by an appointment only.
