Clarke jail escapee interviewed in Georgia Deputies from Clarke County Sheriff's Department went to Brunswick, Ga. last week to interview Andy Hulett, the man who escaped through the roof of the Clarke County Jail last July. Hulett, 32, of Rhine, Ga. had been caught last summer with a variety of stolen goods, some of which he stored in the Chilton community including a boat and trailer and was arrested at a hotel in Jackson. He told Investigator Vergil Chapman and Corporal Ron Baggett that he had learned about an access door to the plumbing area that was left unlocked and that there was a small space in the ceiling where the plumbing and duct work came into the building. Inmates said he stopped eating in order to lose enough weight to fit through the opening. During the early morning hours of July 17 Hulett went through the access door and was able to get through the opening in the ceiling and then used a pipe to break a hole in the roof. He told officers his intentions were to take his own truck, which was being held at the sheriff's department, but he made it outside about 2 a.m., which was shift change for the deputies, so he headed north. He finally made it to Mt. Zion Church where he took some of the minister's clothes out of the church and stole the church van. From there he headed to Citronelle, then Mobile and then back to Georgia. He told the deputies there was three quarters of a tank of gas in the van when he took it and in order to keep going he just went to several service stations, filled up and then drove off. "He said he must have passed at least 15 law enforcement cars and he said he just knew one of them was going to be the one to take him down, but none of them ever bothered him," Baggett said. After arriving in Brunswick Hulett abandoned the van and stole a truck. He was caught at a hotel in Brunswick.
It turns out a federal law enforcement academy is also located there. A task force had been organized to investigate the hotel where officers suspected a prostitution ring was operating. One of the trainees happened to recognize Hulett and he was arrested.
